Daily Devotional - "Through the Eyes of a Cop"

Making Sure our Will Lines Up with God's Word

Dispatch (Assignment): Read Genesis 48:1 - 49:33, Matthew 15:29 - 16:12, Psalm 20:1-9, and Proverbs 4:20-27.

Briefing: As a teenager, I thought I knew all there was to know. I was selfish and had a strong desire to do what I wanted to do, not what anyone else told me to do. As I grew up and matured, I realized there was a bigger plan for my life. One that was dependent on my obedience, not just my selfish desires.

On the Street: (Psalm 20:4) "May He grant you your heart's desire and fulfill all your counsel!".

Several years ago, I prayed that God would send me a young man to mentor. Within a week, I got a call from a friend who was a professor in the criminal justice department at the local University. She had a student that had asked if there was a program that would connect criminal justice students with people established in the criminal justice system that could mentor them.

This young man and I met for two years discussing the criminal justice system, jobs, stresses, positive and negative aspects of a job in law enforcement. Once we established trust and a friendship, we moved from mentoring to discipleship. We began talking about the spiritual side of law enforcement and how a person needed a strong relationship with God to do the job the right way. When he graduated, he became a deputy sheriff in South Texas and a brother in Christ. He decided to go to law school and now he is a prosecutor with the Tarrant County District Attorney's office.

When my desires lined up with God's desires, He was pleased to answer my prayer.

Investigational Resources: See Psalm 37:4.

Officer Safety Principle: God will give you the desires of your heart as long as your desires line up with His plan for your life. Being in this flow is a great place to be.
